ZRC-20 Marketplace Reopens to Just Three Trades in 24 Hours

A marketplace built to prove that Zcash’s shielded network could handle its own token economy just reopened its doors, and in the first day, only three trades walked through them.

I checked zrc20.io/marketplace myself to see the numbers, and the gap between the announcement and the activity tells a story worth unpacking.

    What ZRC-20 Actually Is

ZRC-20 is a fungible token standard for Zcash, built the same way BRC-20 works on Bitcoin. Instead of smart contracts, token state is tracked through JSON instructions, deploy, mint, and transfer, written directly into transactions. Wallets and indexers replay those instructions in block order to figure out who owns what. There is no custodian and no central ledger holding balances. Every operation is, by design, something anyone can verify on-chain.

What makes ZRC-20 different from its Bitcoin counterpart is where that data lives. BRC-20 writes into Bitcoin’s taproot witness, which is public the second it confirms. ZRC-20 instead writes into the memo field of a Zcash shielded note, a field that’s encrypted and only readable by someone holding the right viewing key. That’s a meaningful design choice on a privacy-focused chain, and it’s part of why the project has drawn attention beyond the usual inscription-token crowd.

$CASH is the project’s first token, capped at 21 million units, with 90% distributed through a first-come, first-served public mint that charged 0.005 ZEC per mint transaction. The number 21 million wasn’t picked at random either, it mirrors Zcash’s own maximum supply, though the project hasn’t spelled out exactly why that link matters beyond the symbolism.

A Marketplace Built On Trustless Settlement

The part of ZRC-20 I find most interesting is the marketplace itself. Buyers and sellers settle inside the same Zcash transaction, so the token transfer and the ZEC payment happen together, atomically. There’s no escrow account holding funds in between. Every order is checkable in the explorer, which is the whole pitch: a peer-to-peer token market with nothing custodial sitting in the middle. The marketplace charges a flat 0.0003 ZEC trading fee on top of the standard network fee, which is a small enough cost that it shouldn’t be the reason for the quiet activity I found.

I’ll also note upfront that ZRC-20 is not an official Zcash protocol. The Zcash Foundation publicly denied any connection to the project after an earlier post suggested otherwise, and the ZRC-20 team responded by thanking Zcash for the clarification and stating plainly that the project is experimental, independent, and carries no promise of value. That context matters for reading everything else here, this is a third-party experiment riding on Zcash’s rails, not a Zcash-endorsed feature.

The Numbers After The Marketplace Reopened

Here’s where the activity gap shows up clearly. According to the live dashboard, 24-hour volume on the marketplace sits at just 0.00210 ZEC across three trades. Compare that to the all-time totals: 9.151 ZEC in cumulative volume across 670 settled trades since the marketplace opened. Three trades in the most recent 24-hour window against 670 total settled trades is a steep drop-off from whatever pace built that lifetime number.

The floor price currently reads 0.00000010 ZEC per unit, and there are 16 open orders sitting on the book waiting to be filled. The 24-hour leaderboard shows CASH as the only active ticker trading, with that same 0.00210 ZEC figure attached to it, meaning literally all of the day’s volume ran through a single token.

ZRC-20 Marketplace Reopens to Just Three Trades in 24 Hours

Looking at the recent activity feed backs this up in more detail. The three most recent trades, all CASH, are timestamped 21 hours ago, small transactions ranging from 0.00010 ZEC to 0.00100 ZEC. Everything before that jumps straight to five days ago, a batch of trades that includes a NEAR-ticker token alongside more CASH activity, with sizes ranging from 0.00067 ZEC up to a 347,000-unit CASH trade worth 0.21 ZEC. That five-day gap in the middle of the activity log is the clearest visual evidence of just how thin trading has been since the marketplace came back.

    Reading The Silence Correctly

I don’t think three trades in a day means the experiment has failed, but it does mean the marketplace reopening didn’t trigger the kind of rush you’d expect from a fresh announcement. A team update on X framed the marketplace as back online, and the natural expectation after any “we’re back” post is a burst of pent-up activity from people who’d been waiting.

That didn’t happen here, at least not yet. Sixteen open orders sitting unfilled suggests sellers are still willing to list, but buyers aren’t showing up to meet them in any volume.

Part of this likely traces back to the standard’s own disclaimers. The team has been upfront that everything about ZRC-20 is experimental and carries no expectation of value, and the Zcash Foundation’s public distancing from the project probably cooled off some of the speculative interest that followed the initial mint. A first-come, first-served mint tends to draw a wave of early activity followed by a natural lull once the free-mint window closes, and what I’m seeing in this data looks consistent with that pattern playing out.
